Brentwood Conservatives are calling on the ruling Lab / Lib Coalition running Brentwood Council to protect the newly introduced thirty minutes free parking period.
Concern was raised at the Council’s last Business and Town Centre Committee Meeting, when Lib Dem Chairman, David Kendall warned that it may be axed.
Shadow Chairman, Chris Hossack said, “I have spoken to a number of residents and small business owners and they are all very supportive of the move to keep the 30mins free parking period. It has been a great success and makes it so much easier for local people to support Brentwood businesses, especially retail shops.”
The free parking initiative was introduced back in May by Conservatives, in the face of opposition from Lib Dems, Labour and Brentwood First parties. Given the voting history and the comments from the Chairman, there is now real concern that Brentwood’s new coalition will remove it and hike up parking fees further, on top of the night time parking tax that they are already introducing.
Chris added, “The Council’s own figures show that around 4,500 free parking tickets are issued each week. For the coalition to U turn and pull the plug on something which is clearly popular and successful is a big mistake. They are supposed to be supporting the local economy, not trying to trash it.”
