Brentwood West’s new “Freedom Park” in Cromwell Road had a visit from local Conservative Councillor, Will Russell, Brentwood and Ongar MP, Rt, Hon Eric Pickles and Aileen Nimmo and Sue Smith, from the Beeches Care and Nursing Home, last Thursday.
The four were at the play area to see the new plaque that had been installed, in commemoration of the one hundred year anniversary of the outbreak of war.
The “Freedom Park” initiative was brought forward by Will Russell. He said, “2014 is an extremely poignant year as we mark the Great War of 1914 – 18 and I wanted local people to have something to remember those who gave so much for our freedom today. The “Freedom Park” idea is a simple, yet very effective way to do this and the plaques will be there for years to come.”
The Beeches Care and Nursing Home in London Road offered their support and provided some funding for the plaques. Will added, “ We are very grateful to the care home for enabling the idea to become a reality. It was great to meet with Aileen and Sue and be able to show them the plaques in place.”
Local MP, Eric Pickles added, “ My Great Grandfather fought at the Somme and the plaques in the parks across the Borough act as a reminder of just how many of us have family members who played such a vital part in delivering our freedom today. The “Freedom Park” idea is a moving and poignant reminder for future generations. I congratulate and thank Will for his idea and the Beeches for their generosity.”
