Fight to Protect Public House in South Weald

Monday, 13 January, 2014
Tower Arms

A South Weald pub has closed its doors leaving many local residents wondering about the future of the building.

Last week a sign was erected at the front of the Tower Arms in Weald Road saying the pub had "closed for redevelopment."

Local councillor, Ann Coe said "A sign has gone up saying it is closed and all sorts of stories are being told on the grapevine about the intentions for the building, including suggestions that the owner wants to revert it to a domestic dwelling.

I can confirm that no plans have been submitted for planning permission but I'm trying to find out what is fact and what is fiction. One thing is for sure, there is a need for a real community pub in the village."

The establishment has been the focus of concern for some time, due to anti social behaviour on the premises.

Ann added " The pub is steeped in history and it could be a real gem for the local community. I want to protect it as a pub as far as I can for future generations and I know many residents share this view. I have started a petition to show our support for it. I will also be getting the process underway to list it as a Community Asset, using the new powers given to communities by our MP, Eric Pickles. The village can only benefit from having a community pub at its heart, which is well run and an asset to the local area."

Ann has started the petition and is speaking to local residents to gain support. If you would like to add your backing to the campaign to keep the Towers Arms as a public house and to list it as a Community Asset, then please sign the petition on line at:http://www.petitions24.com/tower_arms_public_house#form
