Last year, the Government commissioned Mary Portas to carry out a review of the High Street and to make recommendations as to what can be done to improve their viability up and down the country.
Brentwood has fared well up to now, with our vacancy percentage well below the national average ( 9% compared to a national average of 14.5%) However, with the demise of some national chains, additional units have become empty of late and I am keen that we do all we can to prevent the situation becoming worse.
Conservatives on Brentwood Council have done a lot over the last 18 months to improve conditions in the High Street. The introduction of markets, event days such as this weekend’s “William the Martyr Walk” along with better signage and a parking review that looks at reducing parking charges by nearly 30%, have all undoubtedly helped.
What is clear is that the input from local businesses retailers and from our working partners is vital to ensure a thriving Town Centre.
As a response to the Portas Report, the Government is offering financial grants to Town Centres. Brentwood has submitted a proposal and part of that is a video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyK0WV2n5lM
